75th X-Plane.org fly-in (Berlin Airlift)

-return to picture archive-

One of the most fun and creative fly-in ideas we've had so far was definitely the Berlin Airlift fly-in, which we scheduled for April 16th since that day of 1949 was the historical high point of the operation, when aircraft landed as frequently as one per minute throughout the day. Special thanks to Andres, Raato, Rundek, Snow and YYZatcboy for their contributions to the fly-in, and of course all the controllers like JPowermacG4 and UIO Spotter and whoever else I might have forgotten to mention here.

In 1949 Berlin was surrounded by the Soviet sector of occupied Germany, but there were three corridors used by Allied aircraft to supply Berlin. Snow posted some information on these on the forums, and Rundek built some flight plans and a CSL package for the fly-in.

I flew three different aircraft used during the actual airlift. Most were made for very old versions of X-Plane but there were no serious compatibility issues. The DC-3 was the closest thing I could find to a C-47 Skytrain/Dakota, and the other two aircraft were US transports actually used during the airlift. Of course, keeping with the period feel, all the screenshots are sepia toned and somewhat aged. Enjoy :)
