The conclusion and no doubt the highlight of our Great Airports tour was none other than Hong Kong's former airport of Kai Tak, home to the spectacular and challenging runway 13 "checkerboard" approach. As an old favorite location, Kai Tak attracted quite a crowd. It took me a few attempts to successfully land the Boeing 747, which I flew in from the previous week's fly-in airport in Tokyo. Later, I explored the surroundings in a Piaggio Avanti before returning to Kai Tak in a 777, operating a Sea King rescue helo for a while, and even engaging in a bit of dogfighting above Hong Kong in a Su-30 Flanker, after ATC had lost all hope of controlling the unruly aviators.
